In history books long locked away, Van searches for the military tactics from times of old.

Tactics from before the Score.

As the Commandant he has access to any book in the Daathic library, but the librarian still hesitates when showing him where to find this one. Van brushes it off with ease as he heads through the dusty corners of the library; not many in Daath were fond of the Dawn Age.

It’s not until halfway through the book, ancient pages almost crumbling beneath his touch, that he realizes why the librarian was so hesitant to let him see it.

Even before the Dawn Age, back when men were forced to use crude, poorly developed technology, there was a culture of great warriors. Men who trained their whole life for the purpose of fighting... the most honorable death was to die with a sword in their hand a shield on their back. Van reads eagerly, licking his parched lips as the book goes into their nigh infallible maneuvers. How could such a crudely equipped army be so powerful? A few more pages in Van finds out why, brows rising high.

Building morale through homosexual relationships.

Building moral, of course, was not a foreign concept to Van. Doing so was a must for any successful army, but… homosexual relationships? His ancient Ispian must be rusty, he thinks. But in the back of his mind, he knows it’s not; in bold, clear symbols the book details how fighting besides a lover made them all the more dedicated, fighting for both their own life and that of the one they loved.

Van closes the book, thoughtful; their civilization did fall, eventually, so there was no guarantee their methods would work, but...

Well, there was no harm in trying.

Largo grunts as he pushes Van’s back against the wet tiled wall, warm droplets raining down on them. Van grips the wall, the showerhead, anything his hand can reach; Largo’s hold is tight on Van’s hips as he thrusts, biting Van’s shoulder to keep from shouting. Van can’t help but let out his own keening moan, throwing his head back and wrapping his legs around Largo’s waist.

Van—”

With one final thrust Largo groans, using all his weight to pin Van against the wall as he comes, legs shaking. Van rides him just a moment longer before he follows, pulling the showerhead down as his body shudders uncontrollably. They sink to the floor together, Van still grasping the showerhead tightly. Largo pulls out after a long moment, standing with some difficulty. He holds his hand out to Van, giving him an exhausted grin.

“Shall we get going?”

The next day, a group of bandits attacks a small crowd of Pilgrims right outside of Daath’s borders. Largo and Van dispatch them with ease, not a scratch on them. The Pilgrims thank them profusely, praising the fearlessness of the God-Generals and their impeccable fighting skills. Largo and Van share a sidelong grin; they know the real secret to their success.

Later in Van’s chambers, Van throws Largo down on his bed and kisses him until neither of them can breathe. As their hands tear at each other’s clothes, Van has one thought in his mind:

He’s going to have to boost morale with Largo a lot more.

Ooh, I like this. The Dawn Age had the right idea.

Also, typo spotted! "The sink the floor together, Van still grasping the showerhead tightly." Just thought you might want to know, because that one was particularly distracting.
