Tales_100 (Tales of the Abyss; Cast)

I've been meaning to repost [community profile] tales_100 stuff here so I might as well round them all up and post them here. Please take heed of the individual warnings.

Sea; Largo the Black Lion
warning: allusions to suicide

Largo hates to travel by sea.

He avoids it when he can, and stays below deck when he can't. Others believe it's mere sea sickness, and isn't it comical that such a large man is weak like that?

And perhaps it is a weakness in him, the way the sea always makes him sick. He can tolerate it when the skies are dark and the water's violent, but it's when the skies are clear and the water's calm that it's the worst. When the sea is deceptively calm, gentle blue and beckoning him -- as it had beckoned her.

Largo hates the sea.

Doubt; Van+Asch

Some nights, sleep seems hardly worth the effort. It's a better use his of time to complete unfinished work than to simply toss and turn and doubt.

This night, his mind is elsewhere and he accomplishes little. A knock at the door distracts him, and he moves to open it.

On the other side is Asch, looking up at him with fear and an uncertain need. "Master? I had a nightmare… Can I…?"

"You may." Van smiles, stepping back. "Come in."

Asch smiles, relieved, and enters his quarters.

This night, Van's mind has no doubts. He's done the right thing.

Pet; Ion/Arietta
warning: underage sexuality implied

Once they're in Ion's room, Arietta starts to tug at her skirt. She knows not to do that in public now.

Ion reaches to undo her collar, without her needing to ask. "Today was a long day. Your uniform must've been uncomfortable."

Arietta nods. "It gets hot. I don't like it." After the collar, Ion starts on her dress. She shrugs out of it and lets out a sigh of relief.

"That's right." Ion strokes the top of her head, and she purrs. "Pets shouldn't have to wear clothes."

"Being a pet's better than being a person."

Ion just smiles.

Words; Sync+Mohs

"I am Grand Maestro Mohs," the man says, eyeing him. "Van believed you had some use?"

He looks away from the man, down at the cloth wrapped around his hands. 'Bandages', he thinks they're called.

Mohs huffs and sets a box down in front of him. "We'll dispose of you if you're not." Then he opens it. "However, you'll be a nuisance if you're recognized."

Inside is something he doesn't know the word for, something red and gold. A face like the others is looking back.

Mohs smirks. "You like it?"

He knows the words. "Hate it."

He hates everything.

Across the Sky; Legretta+Tear

It's raining when they reach the Outer Lands. It's light so Legretta pays it little mind. Yet Tear looks up with wide eyes, both hands out to catch it.

Legretta watches her. "Have you never seen rain before?"

Tear stiffens, then lowers her arms. "I've read about it."

"That wasn't what I asked." It answers her question though. "We'll find a clearing to train. You'll need to learn to fight under any conditions.."

Tear resumes proper posture. "Yes, Major."

Legretta considers before adding another order. "After that, I want you to watch the sky."

"Major?"

She smiles softly. "You'll see."

Turn Around; Dist+Jade

"You abandoned her," Dist hisses, watching Jade through the cell bars. "And you abandoned me."

Jade doesn't say anything, doesn't even bother to turn around. He just turns the page of his journal and acts like he's not here.

"You abandoned everything!" He clenches his fists. "One mistake when we were so close and you ran away and abandoned our work and us. You got too scared to finish what you started and-!"

Finally, Jade holds up the journal, glancing over his shoulder. "I must say, your handwriting is surprisingly neat."

Dist blinks. Then he smiles wide. "Thank you, Jade."

Last Chance; Asch/Natalia

Asch knows it ultimately won't mean anything, when he won't be around much longer, but this is the last night they have. He doesn't want it to go to waste.

He pulls the ring from his pocket, simple and silver, and holds it out to Natalia. He doesn't even have to ask.

"Asch! You-" Tears well in her eyes as she smiles. "Yes."

Asch takes her hand and slides the ring on. "No matter what happens, Natalia, I want you to have this to remember our promise." Suddenly, he pulls his hand back.

"Asch?"

Already he can see through it.

Role; Van+the Fabres

"I'm sorry," Van says with false remorse. He holds out the 'boy', wrapped tight in his cloak and face blank. "I came too late."

The Duke accepts the fake, face twisting with suppressed horror. Madam Fabre sobs tears of relief, stroking the fake's hair.

"You did enough," the Duke finally says. He holds the fake close to his chest and wraps his other arm around his wife. "Thank you for bringing us back our son."

Van nods and doesn't dare offer even the smallest smile, the risk of betrayal too great.

He played his role well enough. There's no need.
